It’s every local’s favorite time of year in Newburyport – Yankee Homecoming!
Don’t roll your eyes. We say this with a smirk as full parking lots and congested main streets can get even the most patient residents’ blood boiling. However, don’t overlook the great opportunities that a local festival can provide. This years’ organizers have done a great job making sure the 2019 Homecoming is filled with some great fun for both adults and children. Here are a few of our favorite handpicked events:
Adults
Paddle the Port (July 27) – This circular 5 mile kayak race along the Merrimack River launches at Cashman Park before making its way up around Ram, Carr, and Deer Island. It’s then a race to the finish as competitors head back to the finish at Cashman. With race categories including Under 18 and 60+ everyone can participate, though we recommend this event for adults. Don’t want to race? Cheer on the kayakers along the course. Click the link for a map.
Waterfront Morning Workout Series (Everyday) – Events include Yoga, Crossfit, Barre, and even military-style training bootcamp. This years’ event is being sponsored by the folks at Pure Barre who combine dance, yoga, other styles of cross-training into a full-body workout. If you’ve never experienced a waterfront workout before – now is your time!
58th Annual Road Race (July 30) – One of Newburyport’s longest standing traditions, the Lion’s Club road race features both 5k and 10 mile distances. Prizes are awarded for various age groups, but don’t let that stop you from participating. All skill sets are welcomed. We encourage you to accomplish something new and set a personal best this summer!
Children
Annual Kids Day in the Park (July 31) – Don’t forget your camera as some of our favorite family memories happen at the Kids Day in the Park. It all begins at Atkinson Common and is highlighted by the decorated bicycle and doll carriage parade. Don’t forget to dress up your kids and your bikes!
Family Day (August 3) – Maudslay State Park turns into a mini fair grounds during this half-day festival. Dance to the music, ride a pony, or try crossfit for kids at this must-attend event for anyone with kids.
High Street Mile (August 4) – The 27th running of the High Street mile has contestants of all ages run from Atkinson Common to Newburyport High School. The Boys & Girls 15 year and under heat begins at 9:15am. See just how well your child can do, and watch or run alongside them on the High Street sidewalk.
Honorable mentions: Kids’ Talent Show, Olde Fashioned Sunday, Parade, Fireworks.
Whatever you do, don’t just avoid the festivities. Get out, walk around, and enjoy the town with your family, friends, and neighbors. This years’ activities run from July 27th – August 4th. For more information, visit www.yankeehomecoming.com.
